Despite the declining needs drill the walls to hang certain things and we mount some furniture or shelves, there are still many occasions where we have to drill a wall and make holes, with the always dangerous possibility of bumping into plumbing or power cables, depending on which wall we are going to drill, which are stuck in sloping walls. When drilling pipes, we can avoid possible faults in electricity or water use different detectors which we have on the market today; but be careful, not everyone is worth it. In that sense, cheap can be very expensive. Let’s look at some reliable pipe and cable detectors.
Bosch D-TECT 150 Professional detector
If we want to play it safe and at peace, we can turn to Bosch’s professional detector, the D-TECT 150. This detector uses an ultra-wide range of radar sensors for millimeter-precision detection: metals, cables, wood, PVC pipes and underfloor or wall heating installations.
With this detector, you would have to intentionally drill a pipe or cable to break them. The problem and very big for most mortals is that this detector is of a professional nature; which, among other things, means that its price is around € 600. Something relatively acceptable for a construction manager, architect or construction expert who has to use it practically every day, but not much less for a homeowner, like any of us, who only needs to make a few holes at home, maybe in a few years.
Although you are interested, we found one on Amazon, used, for only: € 371. See more details >> Or new for 520 €. See more details >>
Bosch GMS 120 Professional detector
If the price or sophisticated technology of the previous detector seems excessive to you, for a normal and current house and a few holes, there is another detector, also professional, but much cheaper and also very, very reliable; Bosch GMS 120 detector, priced at around 85 euros. This detector uses automatic calibration, with a detection depth in wood of 3.8 centimeters; cable detection at 5 inches; Detection depth 12 centimeters in steel; and a copper detection depth of 8 centimeters.
Detects ferrous and non-ferrous metals, wooden structures and high-voltage electrical cables. It says nothing about PVC or plastic water pipes. It has a ring of water light that will tell us exactly the center of the detected structure, so we don’t do it drill in it.
Bosch PMD 7
This detector is perfect for detecting copper, metal or live wires. If what you want to discover are electrical cables running through a wall or some copper pipe, or maybe some metal, this it is a practical detector and quite reliable. What’s more, its price is only € 52.
It detects ferrous metals to a depth of 7 centimeters, non-ferrous metals to a depth of 6 centimeters and wire wires to a depth of 5 centimeters in walls and ceilings.
This is, we could say, the perfect detector to have at home and quietly drill the walls. Because its price and reliability are very good. See more details >>
Locate PVC pipes, not metal, you would have to use a pulse wave generator or ultra-wideband radar sensors, and the cost of these devices can be very expensive. Hilti, has a professional detector that has this technology and costs 1,158 euros. You can see more details and information here. Or use one of the above-mentioned professional detectors, such as the Bosch D-Tect 150.
