How to paint an already painted wall? Depends, it would be the answer. It depends on how the wall is painted and what color you will paint it. That’s why we’ve prepared this article to see how to paint an already painted wall, depending on the color you have. Although, fortunately, it is very simple, regardless of the applied color.
But before you see how to paint a wall that is already painted with different colors that exist, you always have to prepare the wall. And the preparation of the wall is always done in the same way, regardless of the paint we will apply and the color with which it has already been applied. So, let’s look first at how to prepare a wall:
We have to fix it first if there is moisture, cracks, splinters or all that. On these links you can see how to fix it properly, depending on what problem you are having.
In addition, if we want to paint a smooth surface on the wall that is already painted and has numerous roller marks or other protruding imperfections, we will also have to sand it to make it smooth and that the new paint does not mark the old marks and smooth out best.
For sanding a wall, if it is painted with tempera, it will very easily leave it very smooth, simply with a sponge or a block of sandpaper of medium or fine grain, like the ones we can buy here.
If the wall is painted with plastic paint, we will also sand it by hand, although it will cost us a little more. If it has a large footprint or too many protruding imperfections, and the sponge or sanding pad fails, we will need an electric or pneumatic sander, if we have a compressor, to make the wall very smooth. But this is a somewhat extreme case, because you need a lot of prints to need a grinder.
Once repaired and smooth, it’s time to clean it. The wall must be dry and clean. No dust or other impurities. We need to wipe the surface with a dry or most damp cloth to clean it perfectly.
And now we have a wall ready to paint. In most cases, you will not have to do almost any of this, just clean the dust and apply a blow. But still, you already know how to prepare a wall for painting.
How to paint a wall already painted with tempera
Tempera is a paint that is still often used because it is cheap, leaves the walls to sweat, and can also be easily tinted with paints or paints so that we can get the color we want. For that reason, it is normal today to find walls covered with temperament or lime.
Paint the wall with tempera tempera tempera:
The only thing you need to do after the wall is repaired and ready, as we have already seen, is to apply hardening. There is no other trick or step. Apply temper.
The temperature is prepared with water. The bag is poured into a bucket, water is added and mixed until the paste becomes a liquid suitable for painting with a roller. If you have a better electrical remover, because this way you avoid lumps on the temple. If you don’t have it, you have to do it manually.
Painting a wall that has tempera with plastic paint:
Likewise, to apply plastic paint to a wall that has tempera and has already been repaired, you only need to apply plastic paint. If you want a perfectly smooth, I recommend you see how it works here.
Painting an already painted wall with plastic paint
If you are going to paint a wall that is already painted with plastic paint, and you will do the same with plastic paint, after it is repaired and cleaned, you simply have to apply plastic paint to the plastic without doing anything else.
Depending on the color of the old and new paint, you will need to apply more or less coats.
If the old wall of paint is painted in a very dark color, and you paint it in a light color, apply it directly. You’ll need to apply two or three coats, but you don’t have to coat the white paint first. You can do it if you want, but in the end you will give the same hands. So, apply the new paint directly on top.
If the new wall is painted in a dark color, and you will apply a color like red, orange or yellow or any other that does not have a white background, I advise you to give a very light gray coat first.
You don’t have to buy gray, just use white and paint it a little black until it turns light gray. Apply a light gray color, and then, after the hand dries, you can apply a new color.
Strong reds, intense yellows or very bright oranges usually do not have a white background, but a transparent or some other color, like magenta, for example, and these colors are more transparent, so more expensive to cover the wall when we use them.
Therefore, it would be harder to cover a dark color than a light one like a gentle gray. And gray, because it has a white background, with one hand you give it a dark color, it will almost cover it, and you already have a good background on which you will apply an intense color.
All of this about colors is somewhat synthesized and is broader than what I’ve outlined here, so please, if you have questions about color, leave a comment that I’ll be happy to answer.
Painting a wall that is already painted tempera tempera with plastic paint
In fact, I can’t think of a single reason to paint a tempera wall if it’s already painted with plastic paint, but in case you want to do that, after the wall is repaired and cleaned, you only have to apply the tempera to the plastic normally.
As you can see, painting a wall that has already been painted doesn’t have much of a mystery. You just need to fix it and prepare it well and then apply the paint without further delay.
And how do I know if the wall is painted with tempera or plastic paint?
Very simple. With open hands, run your palm over the surface of the wall, rub it a little. Do you have a white hand? If the answer is yes, it is tempera, if the answer is no, then it is plastic paint.
Tempera is very sandy, almost grainy and stained, as if it were chalk, so when you pass it by hand or any other surface, you stain. You will also notice the difference when adding a hand; the tempera is rougher, while the plastic color is smoother and the hand glides better.
