If we have a piece of furniture that we are bored of by its appearance or does not match other furniture or that we simply want to change the design, we can restore it by giving it a completely different look.
For this we can use various techniques, such as covering with wallpaper, decorating with patterns, and we can also use painting techniques. aged white, pickled white or Provencal white, which is painting technique to age it and leave it beautiful, as we shall see below.
We will see how to paint and decorate white furniture step by step with a worn look.
Photography and project by Ana White
Let’s look first materials we will need. These materials and tools are available at any paint store.
- Matte white enamel. (In water or solvent. I recommend solvent) (This goes really well)
- Solvent or turpentine. (For diluting paint) (Buy it here)
- Judean bitumen. (This one goes really well)
- Colorless wax for furniture.
- Electric grinder. (It can also be sanded by hand, but it’s more expensive.)
- Brochure plan palette.
The first step
If the furniture is the color of wood or any other color, we will need to paint it white and first apply a layer of sealing backing that is also white. If the furniture is already painted white, it is not necessary to paint it, go directly to the second step.
To paint the furniture white, we first sand it lightly to open the pores of the wood, paint or varnish it has. You need to remove the shine from the varnish, leave it matte. After sanding, clean it well with a damp cloth, removing all dust and dirt, apply a white layer and let the sealant dry for at least 12 hours.
Now we take matte white enamel. You can use water-based or solvent-based nail polish. We recommend using a solvent as it is more resistant. We will give him the necessary hands until he becomes completely white, usually two hands are enough. Of course, respect the drying time between the hands (min. 12 hours).
The second step
Once the white furniture and paint are completely dry, we will sand certain areas to achieve an aged effect.
What areas do we grind?
Areas we need to sand to remove paint corners, furniture edges, handles … And all areas that would wear out normally over time until the white color is removed and left in the color of the wood. You will do this with an electric grinder in 5 minutes. With this we manage to give the furniture a worn, outdated look.
That must be said This is the most important step, and that you have to do it by noting how it looks, because the better you do it, the older the furniture will look.
To get an idea of where you need to grind, take a look at the photo above and you will see that there are corners on it without white paint, this is where it is sanded to achieve the effect of aging.
After the corners, edges and buttons are sanded, we clean the furniture with a damp cloth to remove all the dust and dirt that came out of the sanding.
The third step
This is the simplest and easiest to do and the one that will give it the final stamp. For this we take Judean bitumen and colorless furniture wax. We open a jar of wax and remove a tenth of the wax and add Judean bitumen in its place. Stir the paste well until it becomes a liquid paste that can be applied with a brush or cloth.
We apply a mixture of bitumen and wax on the furniture, following the effect of the grain. And we will pay special attention to the areas we have sanded, so that the product or patina we made from Judean bitumen and furniture wax give it the aged look we are looking for so much.
When it dries, about two hours, it’s time to polish. To do this, we use a dry cloth and intensively rub the whole piece of furniture. This is not obligatory, it can be left as it is.
advice: Before applying bitumen to the entire furniture, do a test to see if it is very dark or to your taste in a place where it is not visible, for example on the back of the furniture, on one leg.
Note: Judean bitumen is usually very stained, ie it is very dark, and it may be too dark when you apply it to furniture. If you want it to look lighter, dilute the bitumen more or do not give it directly. You can leave the furniture as it is after sanding if you like.
If you have questions or suggestions, you can leave a comment that I will be happy to answer.
And now don’t miss this furniture with an aged white finish or tape effect to get inspired and see what you can do with this painting technique.
